Will a Female President Harm Women’s Rights?
[Disclaimer: This is not, of course, a suggestion that we should try to avoid having a female President. Rather, it is an attempt to see the future.]
The election of Barack Obama to the office of President was a huge win for Black Americans. However, it had an unforeseen side effect. The insult to racist Americans of having a Black President was so great that a backlash occurred, triggering a movement of racists to come out of the closet. The Republican party, FOX News, and conservative talk radio, became much more openly racist. Populist Trump and the MAGA politicians rode this wave into power. More importantly, these Republicans are now successfully pursuing a campaign against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Critical Race Theory, Affirmative Action, the history of the Civil War, and “wokeness”.
The question is, can women expect the same treatment if Kamala Harris, or any other woman, is elected President of the United States?
The rights of women are already on the table regarding access to abortion, with contraceptives soon on the horizon. I can hardly imagine what else will come, but certainly fifty million conservative men can collectively imagine anything. Not to mention conservative women.
Yes, I think electing a woman into the office of President is undoubtedly going to stoke the fires of misogyny. So brace yourselves.
Update: I’ve already been reminded of how Trump treated Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign. Many of his attacks were female-oriented and personal, and that tone has had a lasting legacy for Clinton. We can expect more of the same for Harris. If there is any silver lining, perhaps Harris can turn that against him to demonstrate how Trump and the Republicans are unsuitable trustees for women’s rights.
